Speaker Profile
Patrick Lambe is a globally recognised knowledge management and taxonomy practitioner. He was originally trained in Information and Library Science and worked as a professional librarian in the UK for almost a decade. He arrived in knowledge management via a second career in training and development, and has been based in Singapore since 2002, with a second base in Ireland. Patrick is the author of Organising Knowledge: Taxonomies, Knowledge and Organisation Effectiveness (Oxford: Elsevier Chandos 2007), co-author with Nick Milton of the award-winning The Knowledge Manager's Handbook 2nd ed. (London: Kogan Page 2019), and his next book, Principles of Knowledge Auditing: Foundations of Knowledge Management Implementation will be published by the MIT Press in late 2022.
Patrick is Visiting Professor in the Knowledge and Innovation Management PhD programme at Bangkok University, President of the International Society for Knowledge Organization Singapore Chapter and a member of the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Knowledge Management.
Patrick has worked on knowledge audit, knowledge mapping and KM strategy projects with Irish Revenue and Customs, Bank Negara Malaysia, PETRONAS, Islamic Development Bank, Huawei, Malaysian Technology Development Corporation, Securities Commission Malaysia, Singtel, UCB, Public Works Department Malaysia, and with several Singapore government agencies, including the Health Promotion Board, Singapore Sports Council, CAAS, IRAS, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Manpower, National Library Board.
This workshop includes insights from Patrick's research for his book with the MIT Press, together with his experience in implementing knowledge audit projects over two decades.

Learning Objectives
- To understand the different forms of organisational knowledge and their matching strategies
- To be able to plan and conduct a knowledge audit and KM diagnostics exercise, covering both operational needs and cultural factors
- To be able to build and analyse activity-based knowledge maps
- To be able to develop recommendations and plans for KM interventions based on knowledge maps and KM diagnostic exercises
- To understand how knowledge maps and KM diagnostics can be used as input to a KM strategy, taxonomy development, and scoping of digital transformation initiatives.
- To understand how a knowledge audit can help an organization meet the requirements of ISO 30401: Knowledge Management Systems
About the Masterclass
This two-day programme is focused on helping participants to diagnose the opportunities for knowledge and information management interventions to support the operational work of an organisation.
It teaches participants how to conduct a knowledge audit, develop knowledge maps, and conduct other KM diagnostics on the operational needs and organisational culture, to reach recommendations on possible interventions, and build tactical KM plans to follow up on those needs. We'll also cover other uses of a knowledge audit, for example as input to a KM strategy, exploiting knowledge maps to develop taxonomies, and scoping digital transformation initiatives. You'll be working on our online knowledge mapping and KM diagnostics system Aithin, so do bring a laptop to work on (if you come with colleagues you can work together on your own organisation's needs). We will also show you the manual method for conducting the same exercises.
Participants will receive a copy of Patrick Lambe’s book, co-authored with Nick Milton, The Knowledge Manager's Handbook: A Step-By-Step Guide to Embedding Effective Knowledge Management in Your Organization, and a full set of our KM diagnostics toolkit, comprising KM Diagnostics Cards, Organisation Culture Cards, and KM Method Cards. Participants will also be able to use our knowledge mapping and KM diagnostics platform Aithin during the workshop.

- Using KM Diagnostic Cards to diagnose operational pain points and opportunities around Coordination, Memory and Learning
- Identifying and prioritising common elements from knowledge maps, culture and KM diagnostics into a hierarchy of KM needs
- Developing recommendations for practical interventions to support tactical KM needs
