Knowledge Audits for KM Planning
January 10-14, 2022 (fully virtual workshop with additional meeting on February 17, 2022)
About the programme
This is a one week intensive online learning and practice programme with a follow up session after one month. You will cover the practical steps in a systematic knowledge auditing and KM assessment exercise as preparation for a KM implementation plan. The course is based on twenty years of knowledge auditing experience and on our Principal Consultant’s research into knowledge audits and KM assessments (to be published by the MIT Press in late 2022).
You will review our study materials asynchronously, take part in practical tutorials with our consultants Edgar Tan and Ng Wai Kong, and participate in discussion/advisory sessions with Patrick Lambe. The daily consultation sessions are designed for you to bring your own organisational issues to the group for discussion and advice, and to discuss any clarifications on how the course content can be applied in your context. You will have the opportunity post-course to apply your learning in your own organisation, and to bring your results back for discussion after one month.

- To be able to identify common operational pain points around knowledge and information use;
- To be able to identify common cultural behaviours impacting knowledge and information use;
- To be able to construct knowledge maps and analyse them for KM opportunities and risks; and
- To be able to analyse your audit and assessment data, and draw up a high level action plan.

Day 1: Knowledge Audits and KM Assessments
Before: 1.5 hrs of personal study time to watch pre-recorded video and read course materials.
On the day: 1.5 hrs of consultation and networking.
Day 2: Elements of KM Assessments
Before: 1.5 hrs of personal study time
On the day: 2 hrs of tutorial and 1.5 hrs of consultation
Day 3 & 4: Knowledge Mapping
Before: 1 hr of personal study time

One-month Practice Period
During this one-month period, participants will be expected to conduct a mini project covering about 10-15 hours of KM diagnostics and/or knowledge mapping exercise with proposed interventions. They should submit their report in the form of a PowerPoint slide set (template to be provided) in advance of the final consultation session.

Day 2: Elements of KM Assessments
- The three key knowledge functions of organisations: Coordination, Memory and Learning
- Using KM Diagnostic Cards to diagnose operational pain points and opportunities around Coordination, Memory and Learning
- Diagnosing an organisational culture using archetypes
- Using Organisation Culture Cards to diagnose culture-based opportunities and challenges
- Assessing the KM capabilities of an organisation using a KM Framework
Before: 1.5 hrs of personal study time
On the day: 2 hrs of tutorial and 1.5 hrs of consultation
Day 3 & 4: Knowledge Mapping
- The process of developing and analysing an activity-based knowledge map
- Identifying knowledge risks, knowledge gaps and accessibility issues
- Identifying demands for knowledge and high demand knowledge resources
Before: 1 hr of personal study time
On Day 3: 2 hrs of tutorial and 1.5 hrs of consultation
During: 2 hrs of personal practice time between Days 3 & 4
On Day 4: 2 hrs of tutorial and 1.5 hrs of consultation
Day 5: KM Planning and KM Frameworks
- Identifying and prioritising common elements from knowledge maps, culture and KM diagnostics into a hierarchy of KM needs
- Developing recommendations for practical interventions to support tactical KM needs
- Assembling the elements of a KM Framework and KM Plan

On the Day:2 hrs of tutorial and 1.5 hrs of consultation
One-month Practice Period

All participants will join the same Consultation sessions. There are two Tutorial slots (Group A and Group B to accommodate different time zones). Consultation sessions run from Monday to Friday (5 sessions). Tutorials (4 sessions) run from Tuesday to Friday in Europe and Asia, and Monday to Friday evenings in the USA.

Programme lead
Patrick Lambe is a globally recognised knowledge management and taxonomy practitioner. He was originally trained in Information and Library Science and worked as a professional librarian in the UK for almost a decade. He arrived in knowledge management via a second career in training and development, and has been based in Singapore since 2002, with a second base in Ireland. Patrick is the author of Organising Knowledge: Taxonomies, Knowledge and Organisation Effectiveness (Oxford: Elsevier Chandos 2007), co-author with Nick Milton of The Knowledge Manager's Handbook 2nd ed. (London: Kogan Page 2019) (winner of CILIP UK’s Knowledge and Information Management Prize 2019), and his next book Principles of Knowledge Auditing: Foundations for Knowledge Management Implementation will be published by the MIT Press in late 2022.
Patrick is Visiting Professor in the Knowledge and Innovation Management PhD programme at Bangkok University, Past President of the International Society for Knowledge Organization Singapore Chapter and a member of the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Knowledge Management.
Patrick has worked on knowledge audit, knowledge mapping and KM strategy projects with Monetary Authority of Singapore, Irish Revenue and Customs, Bank Negara Malaysia, PETRONAS, Islamic Development Bank, Huawei, Malaysian Technology Development Corporation, Securities Commission Malaysia, Singtel, UCB, Public Works Department Malaysia, and with several Singapore government agencies, including the Health Promotion Board, Singapore Sports Council, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Manpower, National Library Board and DesignSingapore Council.
He will be supported by Edgar Tan and Ng Wai Kong, who have worked with him on these projects.
